CD Projekt shares Cyberpunk 2077 sales and refund numbers

While CD Projekt is in the midst of sorting the Cyberpunk 2077 problems out with patches, their latest post-earnings call comes with some revealing numbers.

According to CD Projekt, the game shifted 13.1 million copies in 2020. But what about the refunds which we know has had an impact on both the sales numbers and the company’s reputation?

We now know that at least 30,000 copies of the game were refunded through CD Projekt’s own returns program which is a sizable number but not astronomical. However, the return numbers will be higher than this as this number does not include returns to high street retailers or even Microsoft according to CD Projekt.

The platform sales split was as follows…

  • PC/Stadia – 56%
  • PS4 – 28%
  • Xbox One – 17%

Other figures that stood out from the latest financial info release was the cost to make the game. We have heard in the past that it roughly cost around 300 million. The actual number $316 million which is not a small chunk of change. It’s also worth noting that 530 developers were involved in its creation.

CD Projekt states they are committed to the game through further updates and there’s still around 40% of the Cyberpunk team working on fixes with the remainder working on new content for the game.

There’s still money to be made from Cyberpunk 2077 with the next-gen update still to come. It’s incredibly hard right now to see how successful the Cyberpunk 2077 franchise will be overall until we see that update rollout. We also need to see the scope of the additional content that’s still to come.

Most players who picked the game up on day one will have done multiple run-throughs of the game now, tried all the different endings, and explored every inch of Night City. While mods are great, they are only going to keep players engaged for so long as other titles hit the market.

The good news is that CD Projekt has committed to Cyberpunk 2077, and if they want it to have the longevity and appeal of a game such as The Witcher 3, they need to back it fully with new content. In the long term.

There is also an investor’s call available if you want to hear more about what’s been happening.
